Steamfitter-Pipefitter

The steamfitter-pipefitter must be trained in safe use of all equipment used and be very knowledgeable of safety, government and environmental regulations.

Steamfitters-pipefitters analyze, design, layout, assemble, fabricate, maintain, repair and service piping systems carrying water, steam, fluids, gases, chemicals and fuel in heating, cooling, lubricating and other process piping systems. Steamfitters-pipefitters are employed in construction and maintenance in industrial, commercial, institutional and residential sectors.

Throughout the installation of systems, the steamfitter-pipefitter must carry out quality control checks on work performed. Once the job is complete, the system must be tested and commissioned to verify the quality of work and to confirm that the system is functioning to design specifications. This requires the tradesperson to be very knowledgeable in interpreting specifications, codes and blueprints.

Scope of the occupation

The steamfitter-pipefitter occupation includes:

1)    The planning, execution and completion of piping systems according to applicable codes, blueprints, specifications and contract documents;

2)   The installation, alteration, maintenance, repairing and testing of piping and related piping components and equipment used to convey low and high pressure steam, hot water, air, gases, fluids or any other substance in residential, commercial and industrial establishments; and

3)   The fabrication and installation of hangers, brackets, clamps, hanger rods and inserts.
